Manchester United v Birmingham City

The match between Manchester United and Birmingham City to be held on Sunday, August 16, has thrown the football betting world in a state of excitement. The performance statistics of these two teams show that Manchester United is the better team, with several league wins to their credit. But, they have lost some of their hottest football stars to rival teams during this summer season and their top goalkeeper is down with a hand injury. In spite of this, bookmakers still feel that the odds are in favor of Manchester United, especially because of its previous wins and its top quality team.

Manchester United had Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo in its team when they twice defeated Birmingham City a couple of years back. However, the score line on both these occasions was 1-0. The team owed its success to the presence of Ronaldo and Tevez during the 2007-08 seasons. During this summer, Ronaldo moved on to Real Madrid and Tevez moved on to Manchester Unitedís top rival, Man Citeh. Now, with these two players no longer on the team, football fans wonder how Manchester United with fare during its forthcoming match against Birmingham City.

Moreover, the teamís prominent keeper Edwin Van Der Sar will not be playing because of a hand injury. Alex Ferguson, the manager of Manchester United, has replaced these players with Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, and betters are wondering about how they would perform. Bookmakers are not that bullish about the new players. Prominent bookmakers such as Ladbrokes have a 1/6 quote that Manchester United will begin with a win. Sky Bet are more daring with a 2/9 quote on Manchester United.

Birmingham City, on the other hand, is quite determined to stick to the Premier League. Stephen Kelly is the only player who has left the team for Fulham. During the close season, the team took on seven new players. Besides, Birmingham Cityís performance in the previous seasonís championship was quite impressive, although they finished as runners-up. However, the team presented a very disappointing performance during their previous two seasons in top flight. Of the 38 games played, they lost 26 and won only 4. Their pre-season performance was very disappointing, during which they lost to teams such as Crewe Alexandra and Nottingham Forest.

Old Trafford has been very lucky for Manchester Utd, which has 48 league wins to its credit in the past three seasons and only 4 losses. However, Birmingham Cityís record at Old Trafford is not really impressive since they lost all the five matches they last played there.

Manchester United, therefore, remains a hot favorite among betters. A major percentage of the football fans believe that the team will emerge as the winner, in spite of the recent changes in players. Football enthusiasts consider Manchester Utd as a favorite team to begin with a win. Some predict that one could place a bet that Manchester Utd would turn out to be winners in the second half. For those looking for a draw bet try the 9/2 offered by Paddy Power.
